California Health Insurance FAQs

When can I enroll in individual health insurance in California?

Covered California’s open enrollment period runs each year from November 1 through January 31. Outside that window, you generally need a qualifying life event, such as losing other coverage, moving, marriage or having a baby, to enroll.

Can I get help paying my health insurance premiums?

Many Californians qualify for financial help through Covered California based on household income and size. I can help you see what you may be eligible for.

What’s the difference between an HMO and a PPO?

An HMO usually requires you to use doctors in its network and get referrals for specialists, often with lower costs. A PPO gives you more flexibility to see out-of-network providers, usually at a higher cost.

Does it cost extra to get help from an agent?

There’s no charge for my help comparing and enrolling in health coverage.

What if I’m turning 65 soon?

When you become eligible for Medicare, your options change. See my Medicare page and turning-65 checklist, or call 760-297-0366.
